In this multi-part series, we’ll chart the development of Western opera as we know it, from its early incarnations in the Renaissance, through its unparalleled growth in the late Baroque and Classical periods of music, to the heyday of Grand Opera in the 19th and early 20th centuries. We’ll also look at what the genre of opera has looked like in the 20th and 21st centuries, and how, in its varied incarnations, it plays a vital part in the artistic life of many cultures.
